Wasting time

If you don’t read Alex’s blog then you probably won’t want to bother reading this post. Just a heads up :P

Alex has been having a clear-out of sorts. A spring-clean of his online world, if you will. He’s deleted his facebook, twitter, and dailybooth accounts, and he’s unsubscribed from almost all his youtube and google reader feeds.

He’s doing this because he feels like he wastes a lot of time on all of these things which essentially don’t really matter to him. He wanted to cut these things out of his life, so he can spend his time doing more productive things which will be of more benefit to him. I can totally understand this. I waste a lot of time online too; refreshing the same few websites, reading/watching new posts from people. It can be really unproductive.

I understand him deleting twitter. Personally I wouldn’t have deleted my twitter. Sure, take a step back from it. Use it less often. But I wouldn’t have completely deleted my profile.

I’ve looked back over some of my tweets from the past few months, and saw things like “eating a cookie”. WHAT ON EARTH WAS THE POINT IN ME POSTING THAT?! It’s not interesting. It wasn’t worth documenting.

I was explaining twitter to a friend the other day, and she didn’t see the point in it, full stop. She thinks it’s a place for people who are totally self-involved and for people who feel the need to feed their egos by updating their status in the hopes that someone out there will actually care what they’re up to. Perhaps she has a point.

I definitely want to stop posting pointless things on twitter, like “drinking a cup of tea” because it’s a waste of time, and who really gives a shit if I’m drinking tea or not? Nobody.

The thing I do like about twitter though, is that it’s a good place to spread the word about things that actually ARE important. For example, if I see a video on youtube which I think deserves more exposure, then I can post a link to it, and that video might end up getting seen by a few hundred more people than would otherwise have seen it. Or I could link to interesting stories in the news which I think people might want to see. That’s why I wouldn’t delete my twitter. Even if I want to cut back on the amount of time I spend on there, I still think it’s nice to have.

Like I said though, I understand Alex’s decision to delete his account completely. It’s his choice.

Regarding unsubscribing from almost everyone on youtube though…

Again, I understand his viewpoint of wanting to reduce the amount of time he wastes online. But come on… I post one 3 minute video every 2 weeks (if that). Is it really asking too much of our friendship for you to give me 3 minutes of your time every 2 weeks or so? Personally, it felt like a bit of a kick in the teeth when I saw he’d unsubscribed from me, and I’m pretty sure there are a dozen or so other people out there who feel exactly the same. People like Alan, Dave, Jazza, Liam… (although I’m not speaking on their behalf.. I just assume they’ll be feeling hard done by too)

I know I’ll still speak to Alex. We’ll exchange emails occasionally. I’ll meet up with him whenever I’m in London. There’s a fairly decent chance we’ll be working together for three months this summer on a project for Hat Trick. We’ll still be friends.

Given that sole reason our friendship started was because of youtube though… it’s just… upsetting that Alex no longer feels he can afford me the time on there anymore.

I guess from Alex’s point of view.. if he stayed subscribed to me, then he’d also have to stay subscribed to Alan, and Dave, and Jazza, and Liam, etc… so then the 3 minutes every 2 weeks he’s giving me, turns into a whole lot more time when he has to give that time to all of the aforementioned people. But that’s what friends do… they make time for each other, and support each other.

You could quite happily keep up with 30-40 subscriptions by logging in once a week and spending just one hour watching the new videos. Fair enough if you want to unsubscribe from channels like itschriscrocker, where you’re getting nothing from watching the videos other than some “light entertainment” … but don’t turn your back on your friends. Not cool.

I feel like this blog post was really poorly written, and I don’t think I said things quite the way I wanted to, but I just wanted to try to get things off my chest. I also hope this blog didn’t seem like I was attacking Alex in any way. I didn’t mean it to. I love Alex, and just wanted to openly discuss this stuff.

Johnny <3

Johnny, I think you make a really good point about Twitter. It can be a waste of time to read what other people are doing throughout the day and to post what you’re doing. Most people simply don’t care about ordinary, everyday things. Twitter can be an awesome way to find out about things, though, like your example of giving exposure to a video you like. Did you hear about the race to 1 million followers between Ashton Kutcher and CNN last week? Thousands of dollars are being donated to fight malaria because of a simple competition on Twitter, and that’s AMAZING.

Hey Johnny, I only know Alex (and you, for that matter) from watching his vids, but I think I can say this about him just based on those vids: he can be a bit impulsive and radical. He doesn’t like doing things halfheartedly. A bit of an all-or-nothing attitude. But still, I agree with you that it’s kind of odd of him to unsubscribe from you, seen that you consider him a good friend. However, wouldn’t it be better to discuss this with Alex personally instead of writing this on your blog?

Hey Johnny, as the others are saying Twitter, like many internet websites are double edged swords in this respect. They are entertaining but waste a lot of time. Personally I do not see that Alex has done anything wrong, just wanted space which is fair enough, just as long as he doesn’t expect all those he unsubbed from to pay much attention to his youtube activity as a result, videos are such.

I’ll never unsubscribe from you sexy face!

But yeah I can’t imagine unsubscribing from probably around 50 people, because they’re friends as well as entertainers, I wanna know what’s going on with them.

I don’t really use email to chat so without youtube, twitter, facebook, etc I could easily go months without interacting with Alex now. It’s a shame, but like you said it’s his call.
But I couldn’t do it. No not couldn’t… Wouldn’t want to.

I’m not sure if I just misread his blogs wrong, but I think part of what he was saying that the problem wasn’t actually watching all of the videos, but also the fact that he checked his subscriptions all the time. I know he said that Alan would email him whenever he wanted Alex to watch one of his videos, if you do the same I’m sure Alex will watch them (well actually I can’t be because I don’t know him personally, but I’d assume so)! Also, there are probably videos you upload that wouldn’t be necessary for him to see or that you wouldn’t necessarily care if he sees them or not. I’m not sure if that made any sense and i’m kind of just playing devil’s advocate here, because when I read this blog I agreed with you and I would definitely be a bit gutted if my friend ever did that to me, because you’re right that it does kind of seem like he doesn’t have time for you.

I’m not sure it’s really my place to comment on this because I don’t personally know either of you, but I just thought i’d share some thoughts.

I can’t quite figure out what to say here…I suppose I just mean to say that I hear you, and I think we ALL do. I’ve had times where I feel like friends are pushing me away and yeah, it sucks. And you feel frustrated, and you want to vent it out. Just know that everyone gets this way, probably on both sides of this, at least at one point in their life. And we hear you. ;)

now that he has me thinking about it, i think i waste too much time on the computer too..but that’s because i go on everyday looking for something to do. i don’t have very much to do when i get home from school..but still, i think i want to get rid of some things that i don’t care about.
i don’t think i could get rid of as much as him though. or unsubscribe from people.
..yea, that’s all i can think of saying.

=[ I’m subscribed to both you and Alex on Youtube and I’ve seen the video in which he talks about deleting his Facebook and such. I guess I’m just really shocked! It just seems to me if he was going to clear out a lot of his internet activity he would clear out the people/subscribers he personally doesn’t know and keep just his friends? I mean I didn’t even know anything about vlogging, until I ran into one of Charlie’s Videos..without him I would have never know about you, dave, Alex, and about 30 more people! Youtube is a network in which you can make friends and promote them just as they promote themselves. I understand why you would feel a little upset about it all!

I guess its internet spring cleaning time.
Just today I returned from a trip from out of town, and the first thing I did when I got home was open up youtube and gmail. I then spent a a few hours catching up.
But I think practically going cold turkey, as Alex is, is a bit extreme. Without things like twitter or YT, I would loose all the wonderful people I’ve become friends with there.

That’s just my two cents (or pence for you UKers, haha)

I care if you’re drinking tea or not.

lol. I seriously do understand why Alex is deleting everything though. And I also kinda know how you feel, I’ve made a few videos and one of my friend’s has known since I started but she’s only watched 1 and a half. I know she’s busy but arghh. LOL

<3

I have to admit, I’d be pretty hurt too. To think of the idea that I was just a pointless pastime in his mind, at least in regards to my videos., and yet have hm still expect to be subscribed and to watch his. The best way I find to deal with situations like this is maybe explain to him, in casual conversation, that a few people on youtube are a little taken aback by his unsubscribing, you included, and just ask why he unsubscribed from his friends as well. This will either result in an explanation from him to set your mind a little more at ease or will result in him realizing the people he’s potentially hurt by this move and he’ll re-subscribe to his friends with the warning that he might not always be able to watch them right away. It’s really up to him, though the gesture was a little overdone.

I feel the same way about twitter. I like being able to ask my followers questions and get an instant answer, and to point them in the direction of cool videos or websites or articles I find. I also like to be able to tell them when I have a new album out, or, for example, if you have a new shipment of tees for sale. It’s useful. :D

Kristina

Well, Johnny, I feel ya.

to be honest, when alex mentioned in his VEDA that he had unsubscribed from so many people on youtube, i thought it was a bit lame. he could’ve still stayed subscribed to at least know if you guys post new vids and then not watch them all if he doesn’t wanna ‘waste’ his time… i dunno. his choice, though i guess.
i don’t really understand alex and his actions though… he’s a weird guy! haha but i still love him!
