Here are some questions I get asked on a regular basis.
Q: How are you?
A: I’m good thanks.
Q: What video camera do you use to make your youtube videos?
A: A Sony HandyCam DCR-SR32.
Q: What editing software do you use?
A: Sony Vegas 6.
Q: Wow, how did you get so many subscribers?
A: I actually have no idea… luck? I was lucky enough to get featured on youtube which gave me a big subscriber boost, and since then I’ve steadily got more through making videos, doing collaborative videos on other people’s channels, and so on.
Q: Where do you get your video ideas from?
A: I think them up in my head! Although most of my videos these days are video responses where I use other people’s ideas, seeing as I don’t have much inspiration myself…
Q: Who is your favourite person on youtube?
A: I love every single one of the people I’m subscribed to, so it’s hard to choose just one.
Q: How did you get involved in the fiveawesomeguys project?
A: I was speaking to Charlie(issocoollike) on an IM one day and he asked if I’d like to be involved in the project, and I was obviously keen to be involved from that point onwards.
Q: How did you get those banners on your youtube profile? How do you make your channel player start automatically? How do I get a “Links” box on my profile?
A: All those features are offered to partners of youtube only. I’m a partner with youtube, so that’s how I have them.
Q: How do I become a partner with youtube?
A: You have to apply via www.youtube.com/partners
Q: I’m just starting out on youtube. Could you give me advice on where to begin?
A: I’d recommend doing an introductory vlog of some sort at first, just to get you started and to introduce yourself and your channel. After that, the best way to get more viewers, and to gain lots of subscribers quickly, is to make video responses to popular videos. Also, consider making video responses to people whose videos you admire. It’s a great way to start making friends on the site. Don’t forget to comment on videos you watch, and reply to people who leave comments on your videos. All these things will help you become part of the community, and help you to enjoy being on youtube.
Q: Will you come and check out my videos?
A: Don’t just ask me that question without giving any other information, otherwise I almost certainly won’t check out your videos. If you say something like “I saw one of your videos, which inspired me to make a video of my own, and I was wondering if you might like to check it out and let me know what you think?” then there’s a good chance I will actually be interested in seeing it.
Q: Will you be in my collaboration video?
A: If you’re one of my friends, and I speak to you quite often, then I almost certainly would love to. Otherwise, I probably won’t have time, sorry. But if I think the collaboration idea is pretty cool, then I might well say yes anyway, so feel free to drop me an email about your idea to johnnydurham@gmail.com and I will get back to you.
Q: How did you become friends with other popular youtubers?
A: I often get asked this by people who have tried messaging popular youtubers and haven’t got a reply from them. Unfortunately I can’t really give any advice here. If a popular youtuber likes your videos and finds you interesting then chances are they’ll be more than happy to email you back and become friends with you. However, most popular youtubers get quite a lot of “friend requests” and fan mail each day, so it’s hard replying to everyone.
Q: Why didn’t you reply to my last email? Are you just being rude?
A: I’m sorry. I get too many comments and messages and emails to be able to reply to them all, but I try to reply to as many as possible. I do read every message I get sent, so thank you for sending them, but I’m sorry if I don’t get round to replying to you.
Q: Can I use some footage from one of your videos in my video / school project / etc?
A: Absolutely, feel free to use whatever you like. Although it would be nice if you could give me some credit by putting a link somewhere to my youtube channel.
Q: sub4sub?
A: I’m going to kill you…
Q: Why do you like saying the word ‘lollipop’ so much?
A: It’s a fun word to say… LOLLIPOP!
Q: Why do you like bananas?
A: They taste nice :)
